Description
Sunset Swan Family
With excitement, many onlookers and I, watched the swan babies swim on their first day after hatching. Big doings in Viera, Florida!
I was amazed at their size...much bigger than I anticipated. The eggs must have been quite large. The cob (father swan) stayed close to the large island nest. Six cygnets appeared from beneath their mother's wings. One by one, they tumbled down the nest embankment to the water. They bobbed like feathered ping pong balls. However, they were more the size of softballs. Once the babies were all in the water...or rather, on the water, the mother gracelessly joined them. The tiny swans immediately bobbled to their mother. One of the babies seemed to have an independent spirit. He often swam to the father or to the other side of either of his parents. It seemed that he liked to be different from his siblings. He joined them from time to time but was, for the most part, away from the pack.
That was the case in this beautiful scene. The rascal was on the other side of his mother. The parents closely guarded the tiny ones at all times. With an air of pride and dignity, they paraded the family around the little lake. They showed them how to feed on the water grass. They even came right to my feet to let me admire them up close. The sun was setting. The way the light made them glow was mesmerizing.
I used most every trick I know, to punch up the light. Since the mother swan is essentially white, it was a little tricky. I pushed the colors to the maximum. I really was after the brilliant light and quiet beauty. I may do some other paintings of this day. It was an afternoon of deep relaxation and healing for me on many levels.
